Today we went to a tiny town, called Nuria, deep in the hills. First we drove to another tiny mountain town, Ribes de Freser, and boarded a train. We rode 30 minutes up a valley to the headwaters of a river in a stunning mountain basin. No road access to Nuria. In the winter it’s a ski resort. We tumbled out of the train and straight into a meadow to nom on our snacks and lunch. Justin made the big mistake of not buying a baked good earlier in the morning ;) and had a baguette hankering. Remarkably he found a gift shop inside the hotel that sold baguettes. Solid recovery from his bakery miss.
Justin had an out & back hike in mind, but Will was keen on a loop. Will quietly persisted. Justin studied the maps a bit more … and we committed to the loop with a partially eaten baguette stuffed in Justin’s backpack! Kids did great. Proud of them. Sun was out. Catalonia in all her glory. Spending that much time hiking above tree line gives me flashbacks to living in Alaska ;) I love hiking. Sure I do love my adrenaline sports, but sometimes the simple act of walking in a beautiful place can be so utterly fulfilling. It is definitely less gear!!
Family summit photo!! Fills my heart. We drove home in the golden hour (Hazel is obsessed) which turned into the pink hour ;) as we crested a ridge and headed up our valley. Our local views are so divine and becoming really familiar. The region is growing a very special place in my heart.
