Funny

Writer: Heather KirkbyHeather Kirkby

When I stepped away from corporate Americana last Fall, I noticed that I was not very funny. It’s funny I had to stop working to notice. Or maybe I had to stop working to care. So in honor of “my unbecoming journey” and “being funny”, which I hope are related, here are a few things that have made me crack a smile, giggle or full belly laugh. Let’s hope this is a recurring column.

This banana was spotted in a bathroom in a coffee shop in Manchester. It gave me a good chuckle. It made me think there must be a 1,000 things in our everyday life that could be more whimsical in ways that would spark a good giggle - but they aren’t, so we don’t.

I have two brothers that never outgrew bathroom humor. As a good sister I laugh at anything about farts, poo, body parts etc. Poor Mum. That context is important for the next story ;) These naked handmade dolls were spotted in a storefront in Paris. They are somehow elegant, cheeky and a bit disturbing all at once. That’s probably a good description of many funny things. Hazel and I had those naughty is-anyone-looking-at-us kind of giggles when we inspected these one-of-kind dolls. I flexed my super-stealth-I’m-not-a-tourist photography skills to get this shot.

The other day I grabbed two chocolate eyeballs and held them up to my eyes. Hazel and I absolutely gutted ourselves laughing. I should forever walk around with chocolate eyeballs in my backpack. Just in case anybody needs a laugh.
