The End

I remember ages ago thinking I didn’t want to call it the end … “The journey will continue” … “It’s the dawn of a new chapter of life”. Hmmm. Perhaps romantic and idealistic, but maybe denial too. The reality is it ends. I feel it deeply now. This trip is ending. Today is our last day on Fiji. This evening we board what I consider our final flight. We return to North America. I’m glad I started counting down the “sleeps left” ten days ago because it helped me see the end. Our Anthem this week has been “The Final Countdown” :)

Last night at dinner Will asked us to share highlights, after I asked the kids to throw out some questions. Hazel asked us if we’re going to get a dog :) it’s a good question too. Reminiscing over highlights was wild fun. We have so many shared moments and experiences and iconic days. We talked about the refugios (mountain huts) in the Pyrenees, the creperie in Meranges, hikes in the Cadi, shopping at sports stores in Johannesburg and the hard gear shift arriving in South Africa, the guided trip in Kenya - so wild beyond our dreams, so hard to convey in words, adventures in Tokyo big and small, culture shock coming to Australia.

This morning I went for a long walk in the vast tidal zone at low tide, inspired by the island villagers. I wondered what will become my next big dreams.
